Plan to mark female suffrage centenary

The Jersey Women in Politics group – which aims to increase female participation in politics – is planning the events to commemorate women’s struggle for suffrage.

A special States sitting was held on 12 July 1919 which granted rate-paying women over the age of 30 the right to vote for the first time.

Deputy Louise Doublet, who is leading the work for Jersey Women in Politics, said: ‘The centenary celebrations provide us with an opportunity to raise the profile of women in politics and to reflect upon the work we still need to do to ensure that the States Assembly fully reflects the diversity of our Island’s population. We are planning a range of public events including a march, art exhibitions and talks from prominent women in 2019.

‘We would like to invite organisations and individuals from across Jersey who are also planning centenary commemorations to get in touch so that we can co-ordinate our approach.’

Further details about the events are due to be published later this year. Islanders planning commemorative events are asked to contact Deputy Doublet by emailing l.doublet@gov.je.
