As part of the 50 days, 50 Argentina World Cup moments, we will be counting down the top 50 Argentina moments at a World Cup using the daily number.

We are just 1 day until the start of the FIFA World Cup and in 1st place we have Argentina winning their first FIFA World Cup against the Netherlands at the 1978 FIFA World Cup.

Argentina had made it to their first final since the inaugural FIFA World Cup in 1930 where they lost to Uruguay. On their way to the final in 1978, Argentina defeated both Hungary and France 2-1, lost to Italy 1-0, defeated Poland 2-0, draw with Brazil 0-0 and famously picked up a 6-0 win against Peru.

They were up against the Netherlands who humiliated them four years earlier in a 4-0 loss. This time, the match was not played in neutral ground but instead in Buenos Aires.

With both teams having their fair share of chances, it was Mario KEMPES who opened the scoring, he dragged the ball into the penalty area as he held off his marker and scored to give Argentina a 1-0 lead. Cesar Luis MENOTTI’s men had the lead going into half time.

Continuing the same pattern as the first half, both teams had chances to score but it was the Netherlands who found the back of the net as Dick NANNINGA leaped and scored a header just eight minutes from full time to draw the Dutch level. Extra time was required.

Mario KEMPES was the hero as he scored once more, this time a lovely skip through the Dutch back line. His initial shot was saved but he got the rebound and Argentina had a 2-1 lead. KEMPES was the architecht of the third goal as he was involved in the play as the ball fell to Daniel BERTONI who scored Argentina’s third of the match.

The referee blew the whistle and Argentina had won their first ever FIFA World Cup.

Here was Argentina’s starting XI for the match:
5. Ubaldo FILLOL
2. Osvaldo ARDILES
4. Daniel BERTONI
6. Americo GALLEGO
7. Luis GALVAN
10. Mario KEMPES

  1. There is strong evidences that world cups in 1978, 1998 were fixed. Even Maradona’s one would be considered illegitimate if it were today due to technology for that handball goal. Yes i would like Argentina to win world cup this time but even if we do not win, that does not mean anything. WC is decided beyond playing powers.

    • are you serious?
have you idea how many refferee mistakes argentina have suffered historicaly?
in almost every damn world cup.
do you know how many refferee mistakes happened and in other games without argentinian interest?

just for one goal you can delete all the 1986 world cup success?

in 1978 what is the problem?
the only who was suffer was back then the Argentinian people.
we didn t have democracy and my people suffer from Videla regime.

for my country was oxygen and small escape from tyrany.
one breath from huge problems we was suffering.

This propaganda from english media should stop. ENOUGH!!!

      and something last.

LAS ISLAS MALVINAS SON ARGENTINAS !!!

      • I agree Cox4. After watching 90 world cup final if someone claim Argentina had previous success by treachery then these people are true enemy of Argentine football.

        • my friend i was small child then.
i can t explain you how much i cry that night.

little times in my life i cry so much.
i can t find words to make you understand how i was.
and not only me. like me was thousands Argentinians.

i will never forget that day as long as i live.

      • 2002 Brazil WC was fixed as well by Brazillian guy working for FIFA that time. Dont tell me if these tournaments are not fixed.

        • i am not speaking about 2002 or 1998.

          i am speaking about 1978.
only rumors exist from English media.
no proofs no evidence. ONLY RUMORS!!!
the reasons is well known in all around world.

LAS ISLAS MALVINAS SON ARGENTINAS !!!

  2. The back 4 and 2 DM against Spain (6-1) were Bustos, Otamendi, Rojo, Tagliafico, Biglia and Mascherano.

With either Mercado or Salvio for Bustos it is almost the same players in defense…

    Oops.

      • Before the 23 and even 35 were announced we had options. Now we cannot change much. The idea of fielding a defense that was steamrolled by Spain does not feel comfortable. Does it?

  3. My first love sight is 1978 with Mario Kempes, Passarela, Ardilles under the legend coach Mennoti, Hopefully the circle of history will be repeated again in Russia.
