Apology and promises, but no manifesto yet
Mayoral candidates of the Sylhet city polls are making promises to the voters as the city is abuzz with campaigning, although no candidate has officially declared their election manifesto.
Both candidates said they will publish the manifesto a week before the poll, but campaign sources say there is indecision in both camps regarding it.
BNP candidate Ariful Haque Chowdhury, the most recent mayor of the city, is apologising to the voters, as he could not serve the city for his full term since he was in jail for around three years.
AL candidate and two-time former mayor Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran is also seeking votes referring to the development work he did earlier, and also committing to do more development work in the city.
CPB-BSD candidate Abu Jafor is trying to raise voice for change, trying to seek attention of young voters.
BNP rebel candidate Badruzzaman Selim, Jamaat-e-Islami supported candidate Ehsanul Mahbub Jubayer and Islami Andolon Bangladesh candidate Moazzem Hossain are continuing their campaign targeting the majority Muslim population of the city.
BNP, AL PLEDGE TO WORK TOGETHER
Earlier on Sunday, AL candidate Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran and BNP candidate Ariful Haque Chowdhury vowed to work together for the development of Sylhet city after the upcoming city polls. At a workshop and discussion titled 'Songlape Nagorik Odhikar', jointly organised by Democracy International, USAID and UKAID at a seminar hall of a hotel, they affirmed their commitment to citizens.
EC CAUTIOUS ABOUT 'MILITANT ATTACK'
Also on Sunday, Election Commissioner Rafiqul Islam directed law enforcers and the administration to be vigilant about any kind of militant activities in the city, ahead of the polls.
After a meeting with administration and law enforcement agencies of Sylhet division, district and metropolitan, he spoke to the journalists about the meeting.
“Sylhet has been an important location for militants as we have seen the Atia Mahal incident and years before, Sheikh Abdur Rahman was arrested from the city,” Rafiqul Islam said.
“I have instructed all agencies to keep a vigilant eye about the activities of militants before the election”, he said.
He also said police have been directed to take legal action about all the complaints of electoral rule violations.
